WANDERLUST: MEET A MINNEAPOLIS SIGN PAINTER WITH AN EYE FOR DETAIL
Dan Madsen of Minneapolis-based Dusty Signs comes from a long line of sign painters that goes back as far as his great-grandfather, an original old school walldog. Madsen caught our attention with his hand-painted map for the Walker Art Center’s recent exhibition Album: Cinematheque Tangier, a project by Yto Barrada, a show documenting the cultural history of Tangier, Morroco that he completed with his friend and collaborator Forrest Wozniak. His interest in the craft recently took him all over Eastern Europe on the back of an old BMW motorcycle to document long-standing vintage signage in far-reaching countries like Sweden and Austria (apparently Vienna’s a mine for gold leaf). Peep his photos above for some of the highlights and a few shots of Madsen’s own work.
